MEMORANDUM FOR FAMILY HOUSING RESIDENTS

SUBJECT: Aggressive Pets at Misawa Air Base
1. IAW recent changes to AFI 32-6001, para. 2.31, military family housing residents may not
board any breed of dog that is aggressive or potentially aggressive. For purposes of this policy,
such breeds are as follows:
a. Pit Bull (American Staffordshire Bull Terrier or English Staffordshire Bull Terrier)
b. Rottweiler
c. Doberman Pinscher
d. Chow
e. Wolf Hybrids
2. This prohibition also extends to other breeds of dogs or individual dogs that demonstrate, or
are known to demonstrate, a propensity for dominant or aggressive behavior, to include having
the following types of behavior:
a. Unprovoked barking, growling, or snarling at people approaching the animal
b. Aggressively running along a fence line when people are present
c. Biting or scratching people
d. Escaping confinement or restriction to chase people
3. All current military family housing residents who board a dog previously identified as an
aggressive breed, and with an approved waiver on file with the Housing Management Office by
15 July 2016, are grandfathered in and do not require Installation Commander approval.
4. All inbound residents, and current residents without an approved waiver by the
aforementioned date, must visit the housing office by 19 August 2016 to submit a request for a
waiver by the Installation Commander. Failure to comply will result in your pet being removed
from the installation.
5. If you have any further questions, or have witnessed an aggressive dog, please contact the
Housing Office at 226-3200 or housing@us.af.mil. All reporting is anonymous.
