The five internship locations:
Hirshhorn Museum
Gallery interns are public-facing, knowledgeable interns who give tours, discuss
art informally in the galleries, and research art works on view. This program is an
excellent opportunity to develop your career goals or engagement with art. The
benefits of gallery guiding includes: training in professional museum
interpretation skills, improving public speaking abilities, behind-the-scenes
access, and networking with art enthusiasts.
Glenstone Museum
Guide Interns help to support visitors as they experience the newly expanded
Glenstone Museum. Through this program, interns will deliver authentic,
consistent information about the art as well as Glenstone’s mission, core values,
campus, and programs. Contributing to a contemplative and conversational
environment, interns are ready to listen and to learn from visitors in order to help
set the tone for meaningful encounters with Glenstone’s art, architecture, and
landscape. Having completed college course work in art history or in studio arts,
this is a great opportunity to see it all come together in a unique and inspiring
way!
Interns are part of a larger guide team. Interns will work a minimum of 16 hours a
week during visitor days. Glenstone is accessible by means of public
transportation 7 days a week through the MCDOT Ride On 301 bus. Glenstone
is open to the public Thursday through Sunday. Middle and High school visits
occur on Thursdays and Fridays. Training for this position will be provided, with a
focus on Glenstone’s art, landscape, architecture, interpretation strategies,
educational and community outreach, and support, and visitor service.
BlackRock Center for the Arts Gallery Internship in Germantown: Gallery
interns will work directly with Gallery Director, Anne Burton, to assist with
exhibition coordination, artwork installation, jury panel preparation, and planning
for educational programs and special events. Interns will have opportunities to
assist with photography of gallery exhibits and events, graphic design for exhibit
materials, as well as research and writing for marketing and media promotion.
Interns will meet professional artists and interact with the public at gallery
receptions, family days, tours and special events. BlackRock offers free parking
and Ride-On Bus stops. Gallery intern should have availability to schedule
regular shifts to assist in the galleries at BlackRock on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and/or Fridays when artwork is installed. Additional shifts are scheduled on select
Saturdays to assist with gallery receptions and special events.
VisArts Internship in downtown Rockville: VisArts invites a Montgomery
College student to assist with the exhibition and curatorial projects scheduled for
its three galleries during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Interns will work
directly with Susan Main, Gallery Director, and Curator at VisArts to plan,
promote, design, and prepare exhibition spaces for upcoming gallery
programming.
Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County Internship in
downtown Silver Spring: AHCMC invites a Montgomery College student to
assist with the Kramer Gallery exhibition space and as a media assistant under
the joint direction of the exhibit and media staff at AHCMC. Students will assist
in all aspects of gallery management, exhibition openings, exhibition press, and
the creation of narrated slide shows about each Kramer Gallery exhibition.
Students will also have the opportunity to contribute to the AHCMC blog.
